At our recent Fire and Life Safety Expo we welcomed Mark Tansey of Electro-Detectors Wireless Fire Alarms. Mark certainly flew the flag for the Wireless Fire Detectors on the day.
Wireless fire detection
Mark started his presentation speaking about the standards that fire detection systems must comply with. In particular, he mentioned loss prevention standards. He also examined the requirements and testing procedures for radio linked fire detection and fire alarm equipment.
One area of concern is always the power supply with alarms. With his system there are two batteries that work together which meets the battery backup requirement. At a point at which any power supply to the equipment may look to be an issue, a warning is given when it won’t operate for a period for 30 mins. The unit will give a 30-day warning meaning that it will work for that month, but you have those weeks to do a visit and replace the battery. This is good news for the installer who won’t need to do an urgent call out but can schedule it at a time that suits.
Wireless systems are becoming more popular in Ireland and are being used on many types of projects. The installer will start with a detailed radio survey using manufacturers approved test equipment. This records all results at both survey stage and at commissioning. The system is acceptable to record background noise and signal strength separately or as single to noise ratio.
So why are the wireless systems becoming more popular even though the equipment is more expensive to purchase? Mark explained that the fast installation means that the labour costs are significantly lower. With minimal disruption the clients are more willing to pay a bit more for the minimal associated works such as reduced re-decorating costs.
The installers like the reduced risk of structural damage on site. We all know that even if you are careful you can drill through walls or create damage when removing things. With less drilling comes less likelihood of damage. There are reduced installation risks as the less time you are on site the less likely things to go wrong. As you will be spending less time on site there are reduced access issues. You don’t need to be there so long so you don’t need to hire equipment for as long. Wireless allows greater flexibility as if the client has more requirements you will do a bit of extra programming rather than adding extra cables.
Electro Detector systems will suit 8,20 or 100 zone control panel with a single panel system with boosters. Mark explained further how it works, the benefits, the configurations. He then gave real examples of situations where they are installed such as apartment blocks, offices, funeral homes, domestic homes and more. Wireless is also perfect for use on sensitive sites, difficult installations, temporary sites, time limited installations (schools) and where asbestos is present as a risky environment.
He also discussed projects where you might want to get above 7 boosters or over 240 devices. Each year he has bigger projects coming on stream but he is confident his systems can meet the challenges. Electro detector also have a range of devices such as optical smoke sounder, heat detector, heat sounder and heat sounder/beacon devices.
Mark finished by saying that wireless systems do all the same things as traditional systems. They may be used in specialist buildings but all buildings are opportunities. As an installer you can wire it but maybe it is time to consider wireless - easier, quicker and more flexible.
